Racine, WI Address
Imam W. Deen Mohammed

Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Peace be unto you as we greet in Islam [foreign language 00:00:06].
Audience:
[inaudible 00:00:06].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Peace be unto you, as we greet in Islam, as salaam alaikum. We thank G-d for our presence here. Very, very much pleased, delighted to see our friends from the Focolare movement, International Movement of Focolare, and the Focolare men. Also, it's a great honor to be here again and maintain, especially to receive, by his honor the mayor, and the distinguished representatives and supporters of this beautiful city and and our imam, imam Shakur, and imam Luqman. Very thankful for you, and I have to let you know that you have someone [inaudible 00:01:06] to get me here to Racine. [Inaudible 00:01:08]. Every time he sees me he's telling me to come to Racine. He's Telling me as a mayor, everybody and that's our good friend and brother, Salaam.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
I usually sleep well. Very, actually. I sleep [inaudible 00:01:29]. But last night I couldn't sleep. I went to bed, and I guess I slept about two hours or so, and woke up [inaudible 00:01:40] 11:00. I looked at the clock on the wall. I said, "Wow. It's only 2:30." I tried to go back to sleep. I got back in the bed, and finally I did go to sleep. Woke up again at 4:30 and I heard something [inaudible 00:01:54] unless I was [inaudible 00:02:10] or something "Racine" And in our Holy book it's Yacine, not Racine." He sounded like that, you see. [inaudible 00:02:18] I hear my voice "Racine". I guess that's why I couldn't sleep. I up and I did some work around the house and made my morning prayer [inaudible 00:02:28].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
I'm very happy to be here, and it's an honor for me to represent our community with the Muslim American Society and my ministry W. D. Mohammed Ministry and all our supporters. I would like to begin with Muhammad himself to show that Islam says our G-d and your G-d is one and the same. Not just one, one and the same. The words of the Qur'an [inaudible 00:03:03] when translated correctly is our G-d and your G-d is one and the same G-d. That's exactly what it is. One and the same G-d. Not just one G-d. So, [inaudible 00:03:20] there is one G-d, but I have to make it plain and clear that it says our G-d and your G-d is one and the same G-d.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
[inaudible 00:03:24] it's only one G-d, and we know that [inaudible 00:03:31] and we listen and do, and the people of faith we all know that there is but one G-d. The G-d that Solomon says of him, he built the temple peace be upon the prophet Solomon. He said, "I know this house can't hold you, not even the size of the heavens [inaudible 00:03:51] can hold you, and this is the G-d that we believe in. The same G-d. Our G-d and your G-d, is one and the same.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
[inaudible 00:03:56] I have scripture [inaudible 00:03:56] you did a very good job. Thank you. Thank you.
Audience:
[inaudible 00:04:12].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Yes. I'll just speak very briefly on scripture. In our holy book, it is said that Muhammad is mentioned, our prophet Muhammad, the message of G-d is mentioned in the Torah and in the Injil. The Torah, as I'm sure you know, is the Old Testament. Torah. And the Injil for Muslims is the New Testament, the Gospels, and Jesus Christ peace be upon him, the New Testament. The language it doesn't say where it's mentioned, it doesn't say it's mentioned in Isaiah or where. The language is so clear that I was able to recognize it as I myself became aware of the of the Bible, the reading, Bible reading. I was reading the Bible from cover to cover, from Genesis to Revelations. I had completed the reading of the Bible. I was familiar enough with the language of the Bible to recognize the connections.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
The saying in the Qur'an [inaudible 00:05:30] Muhammad is the unlettered messenger prophet. Unlettered means that he was never schooled to be the messenger of G-d, our prophet he's never [inaudible 00:05:46] he never was taught by any religious teacher. He was a businessman working as a businessman for his wife, Khadija, the lady Khadija, may G-d be pleased with her. He is not acquainted with the Bible or any scriptures that's what it means by unlettered, unlearned in the Bible in scripture. The unlettered prophet mention in the Torah and in the Injil as one coming to break the bonds of slavery, and to lift from the backs of the people, the heavy yoke that weighs them down. This was in the Qur'an. This is in the Qur'an.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
[inaudible 00:06:34] has already made the other connection I want to make with their scripture, with the Bible. That was this. That Islam, according to Qur'an is not new a religion. Islam simply means designed, to live at peace with your creator and with your fellow man, and with creation. Designed to live at peace with G-d and the creation made by G-d, and also your fellow man. Islam. We believe that all prophets were Muslim. All prophets were Muslim. And when we say Muslim, Muslim means "someone designed to at peace", with his Creator, with the creation that G-d wants us to be, and with his fellow man. That's the Muslim way.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Now, we know Muslims are not always there, and Christians are not always Christ like either. But we want to be. I Already mentioned that, in this Qur'an it says that [inaudible 00:07:52] in the Qur'an there's an explanation of what was revealed before, of what came before us, an explanation, and also a message for all the world, and a conclusion, and a conclusion of scripture. We believe that no scripture will come from G-d after the Qur'an. We don't say that G-d did not reveal things, but they will not be revealed to go in a book. G-d will not give the world another book. That's what we believe.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Also believe that Muhammad is the seal of the prophets, and when we say seal of the prophets it means that he's comes in the line of the prophets. He says himself of himself in this regard he said, prophets have come one following another," and they were building a house. He said there was one brick left to be put in the house, and G-d chose him to put that one book in the house. If you think about it brother the (unclear) in Muhammad life [inaudible 00:09:02] religious leadership, the imams and teachers of Islam. In the history of Muhammad the prophet, peace be upon him, he was not yet called by G-d, but he was a citizen [inaudible 00:09:19] he belonged to the tribe of Quraysh the largest and most respected tribe of the idol worshiper of Mecca before Islam came. He was called by them [inaudible 00:09:35] meaning the truthful one. The one who does not lie, and he was called by them al-amin, the trustworthy one.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
He was one day, young man, in the holy precinct and the chiefs, the Arab chiefs were about to take the black stone which they believe was a stone that came from heaven fell down from heaven to the earth. They were about to take the black stone to place it in its place restoring the Kaaba after it was damaged my heavy water. Now you wouldn't think that water would be in that part of the world, it's a very dry place, but sometimes it had heavy water, rain, in then (unclear). Anyway, they said, "We see Al-Amin." They didn't call him Muhammad, they called him Al-Amin the trustworthy one, "We see Al-Amin there. Let's call him." [inaudible 00:10:34]. Whom should have this honor to take the stone in his hand and and place it there? So they said let call Al-Amin. So they called him and they told him the situation.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
He said, . find me a cloth, and let's put the stone in the cloth and wach of you take a part of the cloth, the edge of the cloth, and take it to its place, so they did and when they arrived there they asked him if he would take his hand and take the stone out of the cloth and place it, and he did. He took the stone out of the cloth and he placed it in the corner that he wanted it placed. We believed that this all had connections with the Bible, with [inaudible 00:11:16] before in the Bible.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
So much for scriptural connections. Now, let me say here Muhammad said many things. In his last sermon he said, peace be on him. He said, "Listen, for you present, you who are present take this to those who are absent. and those who receive it from you take it to others. He said the ones who receive it last This is to those that are acting. And those who see this anew, take this to others." He said, perchance the ones who receive it lastly will understand it better.
Audience:
[inaudible 00:12:12].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Now isn't that something? But I can understand that. I can imagine pagans or idol worshipers coming in to this religion. They were not Christians. They were not Jews. They were not people of scripture. They had not been raised to respect and understand scripture. it will take them some time to really understand the prophet's message. If it learned so much in one generation then the next generation will have to learn more and more. That's not to say he didn't have bright minds who were grasping his knowledge of the Qur'an and his teachings, and doing wonders with it. Yes they were. [inaudible 00:12:52] or even the greatest among them, like Abu Bakr and Omar and Othman and Ali. We all know these great names in Islam. These are four, the major leaders [inaudible 00:13:02] rulers that came after Prophet Mohammad. But did they know scripture like Christians know scripture.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Did they know scripture like Jews, rabbis know scripture. I don't think so. I do not think so. I don't think even those great men with their great minds had the the perception and grasp of Islamic knowledge and Qur'anic teachings that many of our scholars of today have. I don't believe they did. And we worship them almost. But I don't believe they did.
New Speaker:
He said, also, there will come a time when you will see Jesus Christ peace be on him and myself together. Muhammad said that. That there will come a day when the people will see the two messengers of G-d Christ Jesus and Muhammad together. Together. [inaudible 00:13:58] I believe that time is now. Our world is one. And for the first time, the great religions, are realizing that they have to work together and benefit from the knowledge and [inaudible 00:14:12] and wisdom and [inaudible 00:14:12] you can't do it alone. We have to benefit from the great blessings that G-d has bestowed upon us separately [inaudible 00:14:23]. We have to benefit by working together.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
We are realizing that, for the first time, Mecca is [inaudible 00:14:31] dialogue with Christian leaders of the world [inaudible 00:14:39] so we are definitely , living in the day of religion (unclear). I believe that the world will see these two great figures together in this day and time.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Muhammad the prophet was born at [inaudible 00:15:04] and Arab and Unclear) the peninsula we call Saudi Arabia now. That's a new name for for that land. It was called the land of the Arabs. In the Bible you'll find Mecca mentioned as Bakkah we are still aware, in Islamic teachings, that Bakkah is the old name, ancient name, for Mecca. Bakkah. and Bakkah is in the Bible. The Bible says, it's a prophecy, that waters will run in that land. Water will run in that land. We understand that to be a prophecy. There will not always be an idolatrous land, that that land will be blessed with revelation from G-d. [inaudible 00:15:58] water will rain down from heaven, and oh that does it.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
It will be blessed with rivers to run through it. You know the Zamzam, the great well of water Zamzam. It's underground water, and (unclear) Zamzam influenced Muhammad the prophet the great wise men and and spiritual men of that area, long before it was mentioned in the Qur'an, the role of Zamzam which you'll find in the Qur'an mentioned many, many times over and over, "Land under which river's flow. Land under this river's flow." And the Zamzam that comes up, the well actually comes from a great water source running underneath the earth from that area, that land we call Arabia.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Mohammad, born there, in that land, and he was born, I say again, among idol worshipers. He did not worship idols. It is said that there was a group of people that didn't worship idols. They were a small group. We believe that they were called hanifa and in singular hanif. In our holy book, Abraham is called the hanif, and it means that he was always obeying the best of his nature. Simply put, he was upright in his nature. he was always upright with his nature. Upright that accords with the innocent nature that G-d created for all human beings. Innocent nature, like a newborn baby. No newborn baby is a criminal. You don't deliver any criminals mothers. There was a time in the history of our criminal law in the United States that there [inaudible 00:18:06] criminals and protect the society from having] a child that would be another criminal. That didn't last long in the history of American criminology. It didn't last long. They ruled that no child was born criminal. That was ruling. No child is born criminal. That's the belief.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
As a believer you believers in Christ Jesus. And Muhammad the prophet, peace be upon both of them, that's our belief too. That no one is born criminal. That we all are the creation of G-d, you come here the creation of G-d. You are made in heaven by G-d almighty, and you come here the creation of G-d, innocent, clean slate, and we make it dirty after we get [inaudible 00:18:58].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Yes. So, Muhammad came also to promote the freedom of religion. He held his followers responsible for protecting the holy places of other religions. Christians, there's another group called Saba, Sabians spelled S-A-B-I-A-N-S. Pretty sure that's the spelling. Sabians. Called Saba in the Qur'an. It was that group [inaudible 00:19:34], and they're still around. They [inaudible 00:19:36] there's still some of those people still practicing that religion. They believe in one G-d also. [inaudible 00:19:44] Sabians and Christians and Jews were protected by Muslims if there place of worship within the land that goes under Islamic authority, under Islamic authority. The tradition has documented showing that the prophet mandated that the Jews should be allowed to practice our religion and it clearly says as they had been practicing it. No change was imposed upon them or anything, and also the Christians the same, they were allowed to practice their religion just as they had practiced it before. No change.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
In my conclusion, I want to say that in the holy book this [inaudible 00:20:37] is not understood correctly by many Muslims and by many wise and sincere leaders of Islam. In the Qur'an [inaudible 00:20:47] and fight them. Meaning, those who persecute religion. Idolaters, mostly were persecuting religion. Prophet Mohammad had two uncles who was their enemy, right in his own family. It says fight them until there's no more persecution. Here's Prophet Mohammad told by G-d to fight those who try to deny you the freedom of religion. But don't fight them forever, fight them until there's no more persecution. And religion is free for G-d. So that I, a man, can pray to my G-d and have my privacy in my religion with my G-d, and live in your land among you, and disagree with you. That as long as I represent decency and peace, respect the decency and peace, that I should be allowed to have my [inaudible 00:21:52] private relationship with my G-d, and go to my place of worship with others who have this relationship with G-d that I have, and not be hindered. [inaudible 00:22:05].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
This is the Qur'an. This is the Qur'an. This is what Prophet Muhammad was given from G-d. Some of the people say, "Oh, no. Also in Qur'an it says that Islam shall become the dominant religion." They took these two verses, these two references, and they put them together. Fight them until there is no more persecution, but you can't stop fighting them until Islam is the dominant religion. Most of the scholars of Islam, teachers and leaders of prayer, imams, all of them, the scholars, who had a lot of respect from the Islamic world. [inaudible 00:22:51]. I guess that's because Prophet Mohammad said that the ink of the scholar is more precious than the blood of the martyr. [inaudible 00:23:02] they have great respect, the learned in Islam.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
They do not agree with this kind of interpretation that we are to fight other people until religion is the dominant religion on the planet. The word is [inaudible 00:23:24] it means that it shall become the most apparent of the religions, and the most popular of the religions. What the prophets said is coming true [inaudible 00:23:33] Islam is the fastest-growing religion now, so maybe it will become the most [inaudible 00:23:35] the most prevalent, and the most seen religion [inaudible 00:23:44] the way we pray, not many people in religion will stop in the road. I've seen hundreds, less than 100, 50, 20, hundreds stop on the road [inaudible 00:23:53] outside, away from the holy precinct, on the way there, and they make their prayers right on the ground. That's what we're supposed to do [inaudible 00:24:02]. Because Allah says the earth is the place of worship, the mosque.00:24:18]. I'm sure that in time, we will become the most seen, and our religion, perhaps, will become the most popular in the world. Don't start shouting now [inaudible 00:24:38].
Audience:
[inaudible 00:24:38].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Especially when you don't have the quality with the quantity, and we are far behind on the quality of [inaudible 00:24:44] we need to bring the quality up. The numbers are increasing, but the quality just keep decreasing. The quality of the Muslim has to be there. That kind of frightening [inaudible 00:24:54] we're becoming the fastest-growing religion. Because we don't want the wrong image to grow so fast. Grow so fast maybe we won't be able to correct it.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
I can conclude this with saying, Muhammad the prophet was sent here to the world to give support for the great messengers and prophets that came before him, and to support the way of G-d. We, as Muslims, we are obligated to be the friends of all good people. G-d says he has not sent you to to be any other than a mercy to all the world. We're supposed to have kindness and mercy and charity, as a [inaudible 00:25:39] for all.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Thank you very much. Peace [inaudible 00:25:41].
Audience:
[inaudible 00:25:43].
Speaker 3:
[inaudible 00:25:57].
Audience:

Speaker 3:
[inaudible 00:26:07], believers.
Audience:
[inaudible 00:26:20].
Speaker 3:
[inaudible 00:26:20] supposed to go to rooms, and I'm with the Ephraim [inaudible 00:26:23] Cultural Center. I'm [inaudible 00:26:23] programs. My question was what did Mohammad say [inaudible 00:26:32] and is it going to be in Chicago also [inaudible 00:26:35].
Audience:
[inaudible 00:26:35]. Thank you very [inaudible 00:26:36].
Speaker:
Well, I suppose it'll be a regular event. When I talked to the county executive about it, I gave her documentation, I gave her what the imam and [inaudible 00:27:00] Muslim mission society was all about, and that's what she said [inaudible 00:27:06] came to my office. You got to [inaudible 00:27:08] make sure do it here and all over the world, as far as I'm concerned.
Speaker 3:
Okay.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Anyone else? Yes sir?
Speaker 4:
[inaudible 00:27:30].
Speaker:
I was at the courses at [inaudible 00:27:35] many times, and [inaudible 00:27:36] September 11th is that we've had many course correct [inaudible 00:27:43] media and to [inaudible 00:27:44] safety. One of the main questions that they're asking is are the Muslims [inaudible 00:27:53] changing their dress, because they see that their women are not wearing what is [inaudible 00:28:00] called a hijab, and those kind of things. They were wondering if that's going to be a standard for us now.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
I have learned much from my father. He passed in February of 1975. He was the leader of the Nation of Islam until he passed. From 34 till 1975 in all. Whenever there was friction in the air, trouble in the air, for Muslims. He would tell his followers to be careful, to be wise. He would often tell the sisters that this is not the time to be out on the streets he would tell them to stay at home, stay in their houses. So benefitting from his wisdom, my advice that I gave and I'll give it to you again. I gave it to you here also. You should not go out on the streets unless you have to [inaudible 00:29:09] go out in the streets [inaudible 00:29:11] especially if you're going out together and going to be recognized as Muslims. Because we've had insanity in our public before September the 11th and you have to be very sisters. We've already had many reports of sisters being attacked on the street [inaudible 00:29:36] New York City, as far as Los Angeles, California. One sister had her hair covering snatched off her head while she was walking in the streets.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
We are not required to dress in any style except righteousness, decency, modesty [inaudible 00:30:00] your head around, or put on a hijab, or dress like part of the popular that sisters dress. That's your [inaudible 00:30:17], and they look beautiful in that. But, it is nor required of you in Islam to dress like that. You are only required to dress modestly. You can look like any decent American. There are times in history [inaudible 00:30:33] America we know that women's styles have changed from long dresses to short dresses, from loose-fitting clothes to tight-fitting clothes. You might find a decent woman, or any woman, walking [inaudible 00:30:51] walking downtown Chicago, dressed very decently, long dress, her breasts covered, and looking just like you. So what's wrong with you looking like her?
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Now, that doesn't mean that we are insisting upon you not wearing the style that identify you as a Muslim in the public. That does not mean that. No. You are not [inaudible 00:31:28] in that. All right. But we are asking you, to be rational and to be comfortable and to be American and Muslim.
Audience:
[inaudible 00:31:42].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Yes?
Speaker 5:
[inaudible 00:31:53].
Aisha Shakouri:
I'm sorry, Michael. My name is Aisha [Shakouri 00:32:02]. The question that I have for the imam is, imam [inaudible 00:32:07] Mohammad. I would like to know, question is for myself. Maybe there's others who want to ask the question [inaudible 00:32:13]. What is your response, or your opinion, in regards to the Bush administration [inaudible 00:32:23] to the attack on terrorism?
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Well, you asked me a lot. I know how to answer [inaudible 00:32:41] Muhammad. The [inaudible 00:32:51] . I do believe that. I have studied the [inaudible 00:32:59] I know that some of them do not understand what's really driving them. Sometime they thinks it's their religion [inaudible 00:33:15] been driven by the need and desire to answer the call of the religion. That I am aware that many of them have been scared very deeply because they can not have their glorious history of Islamic civilization that was lost a long time ago, lost to ignorant Muslim leadership, lost to the true faith, lost to colonial days, the days of colonial domination, their country was taken over by Christians, and they would not have the freedom to to even practice their religion and have their religious food, and they're very bitter, scared very deeply. (Unclear)...see what happens and how it happens and what they should do as decent Muslims today.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
In the light of new circumstances, that the Muslims have [inaudible 00:33:59] . They were not able to do that. They are not able to come to that rational position, and put the [inaudible 00:34:37]. I do believe that they have just blindly looked for anything to support their position. They would like to have Muslims [inaudible 00:34:39] their freedom of religion, and to impose their freedom of thought or their thinking on all other Muslims. That's the truth [inaudible 00:35:05] in Islamic leadership today. Not in America, but all other [inaudible 00:35:16] everywhere. In some places it's less [inaudible 00:35:21] obvious than in others. But everywhere there are those that are so desperate to bringing back the days when a man, a man, can take the Qur'an in his hands and hold the prophets before you, the sunnah, the prophet's way before you, before you, and dictate to you your life.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Really, there are scared of freedom and they think taking freedom away to bring back the glorious days of Islam. The glorious days of Islam came because Islam is freedom, justice, and equality.
Audience:
[inaudible 00:36:30].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
[inaudible 00:36:30] come up, please. [inaudible 00:36:31] wants to take the [inaudible 00:36:39].
Audience:
[inaudible 00:36:42].
Speaker 7:
[inaudible 00:36:46] come into El Islam. Imam [inaudible 00:36:51] beautiful, beautiful words in Islam to say [inaudible 00:36:56] thank you.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Shahada means witnessing, and you say In the first person [inaudible 00:37:11] I witness [inaudible 00:37:14] you say ashadu. I witness. I witness. Excuse me. Prophet Muhammad [inaudible 00:37:20] peace and blessings be upon him, it is recorded in the hadith collected by Bahari and Muslim and other hadiths, that Muhammad the prophet, when he was [inaudible 00:37:36] a Christians who was converting to Islam, who was asked [inaudible 00:37:42] did not receive an [inaudible 00:37:44] he did not ask [inaudible 00:37:46] who would say he also required that they believe that Jesus Christ is a messenger, prophet and messenger of G-d. He would ask them did they believe that and similar things. When there was a person known [inaudible 00:38:01] for lewdness, for indecency, like a prostitute. He had been a prostitute or something. Our man had been a criminal, or had been prostituting [inaudible 00:38:15] should have known [inaudible 00:38:17] would ask them also, "Do you accept to separate from that kind of life and never do those things again?"
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
He's so [inaudible 00:38:20] this is true according to the circumstances. I believe that even if I don't ask the [inaudible 00:38:39] the witness, Christ Jesus, I have to let her know that in Islam you accept the virgin birth, but also his mother as Miriam, Mary, and her blessed son. We accept them both as blessed creations of G-d, and we accept Jesus Christ as , as Christ. Meaning, that no one created him except G-d, and that man could not produce him. He was created in his mother, by almighty G-d. This is the belief in Islam.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
I want that to be made clear, and I want you to understand that when you say you take shahada, it means that you have thought about this with your mind, you didn't rush into this, this is not emotional decision of yours, you have had time to think about this with your rational mind. And, after thinking about it, you have decided that Islam is your choice. Muhammad the prophet permitted people who wanted to become Muslim, to even talk with Muslims, and pray with Muslims, before they even took shahada, so they would learn the religion and feel comfortable in the religion. I just want you to understand, are you, after hearing what I've said, are you still comfortable taking the shahada? Yes, [crosstalk 00:40:08]. [inaudible 00:40:12].
Speaker 8:
[inaudible 00:40:14].
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
That there is but one G-d.
Speaker 8:
There is but one G-d.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
And Muhammad is the messenger of G-d.
Speaker 8:
And Muhammad is the messenger of G-d.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:

Speaker 8:

Imam W. Deen Mohammed:
Allah.
Speaker 8:
Allah.
Imam W. Deen Mohammed:

Speaker 8:
