Imams' Class Oakland, California
Bro. Imam Warithud Deen Muhammad

Well, I really enjoyed that. Yeah, those soap operas is too much soap. Not enough water, you know, you get too much soap and not enough water- you have to rinse off. Now, I just thought I'd mention something; you know Reverend Moon and his people, they call them the "Moonies". Now, and Oxydol, you know Oxydol - that wax; he tied it all in very beautiful. I don't mean to differ with that because I follow that reasoning; but an ox can be a doll too. See, when you make the ox-a-doll you've got something, to play with.

Now, I need my little grip. When we are finish, we hope to finish in time to have some questions; have time for some questions. Now, I write small to save space; alright. But my eyes are not as good as they use to be. I can't see that small writing I use to write, anymore - alright. So that's what I got this for. Alright, now -oh last week; can I, while I'm doing this can I have someone, can you erase the board for me? Last week you know we were discussing, the last thing, it was a question asked about the land being three-fourth covered by water and one-fourth remaining out of the water. And we were discussing that: but I wasn't quite satisfied with my comments. Cause there was more that I was hoping to bring out but I didn't get it out. So let's - I'm going to make some additional comments.

The need for moral life and spiritual freedom; moral life and spiritual freedom is also symbolized in the " dust concept ", that term " dust ". Life-requires rational, that is human life, it requires rational sensitivity. Some people are sensitive to emotional influences but they're not sensitive to a rational influence. And you can appeal to them all you want with a rational attraction; and you won't bring them to life. They get they'll go to sleep on you; they get dead. Then some people you can appeal to them with a rational and they come right alive, right to life. They become alive and if you appeal to them from an emotional angle or point of view, you might loose them. They get disinterested, you see. So, I just want to make it clear that in one sense, in some sense; we are land, dust, you see. I wasn't quite satisfied with that because I know it was something that we were missing.

Now, if we are sensitive to spiritual matters and that sensitivity is also a rational sensitivity; then wouldn't we be like Job sitting in the dust? Those who're familiar with Job, the story of Job. How he was sitting in the dust, the Bible say sitting in the dust, and he's really trying to understand his situation, his Predicament, his bad times, his misfortune. And he was turning to Allah, turning to God for understanding; and he even wanted to see and understand God better. Because hard times make you turn to God and hard times make you even want to see God better, so you can feel more comfortable with God, right. So this is Job's story, and the Bible said that "Job was sitting in the dust", and if you follow that story, the people who got in there with him; his friends, they joined him. And they began to try and influence him to give up. They, tell him, "go on - stop this senseless search of yours; this senseless search for the unknown God. Go on, live your life and be free and happy", you know. But Job, he wanted to obey what he felt was God's Will and he didn't want to just have wealth in any way or by any means. He wanted to please God. So, as the story goes, finally Job is rewarded for his faith, and his goodness, his righteousness, his steadfastness. He's rewarded with much more than he had before; much more than he had lost; and he won out over his friends.

His friends were trying to rationalize too - reality. What is reality? What is the beginning? What is the end of things? But Job won out, you see. So he was in the dust; so the Bible says. So we understand from this then that dust is also symbolic of that spiritual, spiritual sensitivity in the rational mind. Sometimes the spiritual concerns never reach the rational appetite in the individual; they just stay in the emotional nature and in the emotional appetite; but when those spiritual questions get into the rational appetite then we begin to search for an understanding, you see. So, we just wanted to make that clear.

Now, we also mentioned stone. A stone symbolic of convictions, rational convictions; or it doesn't have to be rational convictions, it can also be an emotional conviction. Because as is, as Qur'an says - "and there's some stones that burst and water gush forth from them". They burst, or crack under the fear of God -it says; and from them gush forth water. So a stone also can be an emotional conviction. A conviction that is stubbornly held can be a stone. Then stone can be anything that you trust completely, it's solid, it's solid; something that you trust. Because scripture mention God as being the first rock; and you know there are so many spirituals about the Lord being my rock, you know. Something firm and solid that you trust. But stone also have a bad implication, a bad connotation too. Because, people who are not responsive to good influences or to compassion, to be compassion; they don't respond to the need to be compassionate. They call them what? Stony heart - stony heart; stony heart.

So stone has good meaning, stone has bad meaning. Stone means a conviction, stone means also, as I've said - it can be an emotional conviction; stone means, is, a spiritual conviction, spiritual conviction. So when we're talking about stone we're talking about conviction. And when they use to lock People up, they use to put them in stone dungeon. You know the first jails were really stone dungeons. Yeah. They put them in the stone dungeons. They either put them in a hole in the ground and put stones over it; or they had stone dungeons, a stone house lock-up for him. Stone is conviction.

Now, look how the word come - "adamant" , "adamant". Adamant means very stern, very, very firm. Right? Yes, stern - adamant. He's holding to his conviction, adamantly - very sternly, very firmly. So that tells us something. Why they call it adamant? Adamant. Will you put that word for me, to save time so I won't have to walk over there? ADAMANT. Adamant; you see " Adam " in the word, see - " adamant ". Now, Adam was a man of very strong convictions, yes. But if you look here; we're talking about stone - talking about stone. We're still on the idea of stone, the Concept of stone. And it suggests that this kind of conviction is like spiritual conviction; like intuitive conviction. Cause after all, a stone has nothing in it that tells us it is logic. There is more logic in a tree to me, than a stone.

Because a stone logic has to have divisions. Right? Logic has to have a pattern. To form a statement of logic you need a pattern you see. Stone doesn't necessarily show any pattern. But think about this now - stones forms some mountains. In fact, most of the great mountains are formed of stones; and they're stone upon stone. Right? And there is a logic there. Even without the stone, there's a logic. The base broad, the top narrowed as the height, as you ascend. Right? The base broad and the broadness narrows as you ascend; so there is a logic, like the pyramids, so to speak. So there is a logic there. The base is broad and it's coming to a point. Right? So the mountain is coming to a point. Do you remember what we were talking about last time, the point? Coming to a point? Right. And when you become very sharp at the point they say, "acute", "acumen"- right; keenness of mind, you see. So we can see a logic there.

Now, in Genesis says that Jacob found Rachel, I believe it was, with the sheep at the well. And the stone was removed at certain times and the sheep were allowed to drink; but only at certain times, specific times. Jacob removed the stone and put it back in his place; not in its' place, you read the Bible for yourself- you'll see; in his place. But the average person would never catch that; they'd just- they won't never catch that, they'd never catch that. And he put the stone back in his place. So there, stone is referring to a conviction, a conviction you see. Alright.

Now what is dust? Isn't dust a fragmented stone? Dust is a fragmented stone, you see. So when our convictions are broken like Job's was; Job he was, he had, you know he had a lot of faith but his spirit, his spirit was, broken and the things he had been believing in before he started to question. Right. So he was sitting down in the dust. Meaning that he was questioning his previous notions, previous convictions; breaking them down into dust, examining them. Examining them bit by bit, Piece by piece; breaking it down to its finest particle, finest point. To see if he could see all the truth in it or could see all the lies in it. So this dust can again refer to the rational urge in the spiritual life; rational urge in the spiritual life.

And you know men take stones and they rub them together and they make fire. Just like the boy scouts take your sticks and they rub dry sticks together and they make a fire. Some stones, I think ; what they call them- lodestones or something? No not lodestones, flint-stones; you use them to light the fire, you see.
And the Jinn was before was made before the man and he was made of fire, right? So says the scripture. Alright.

Now, getting back to that dust and its problem; the dust and its problem. And why, why I hesitated to say that we're land; because land was contrasted with or compared with water. He said, "Does that have anything to do (I believe that was the question) with land being three-fourth covered by water? ". Land three-fourth covered by water, the part of the land that's out of the water, it has water under it; or it has water in it. If not, it produce no life, right. It produce no life. What comes from waterless earth? Nothing that you can put into your living body, not life. But, I mean, nothing that grows, nothing that grows. But the material, material itself-the earth itself, before it gets the water, has in it the minerals, nutrients and things that we need for life. Right? Then when water -comes, it's possible to have life. The two come together and it's possible to have the life.
Now, so we may say then, that the material without the water is symbolic of the rational pattern, rational pattern.

Those things that are necessary for the rational pattern to develop. And water is the human mind psychic sensitivity that's required in order for that kind of understanding to come into the mind and be clear. If the psychic is not connected with the rational Patterns, the psychic will never develop life. Can you, can you throw seeds out there in the water, and they grow? No. Some flowers grow, some plants grow on top of the water. Water-lily, it will grow right on top of the water. But it's getting more than water. It's getting minerals out of the water, out of the air nutrients, out of the water and the air- you know, you think it ain't there but it's there. If it was in pure water without the nutrients and minerals and et cetera; it couldn't grow. So it's a combination of these things, you see. Sun, water, air, land- it takes a combination of those things.

To understand, to get some scriptural understanding again of the problem with dry land. Joseph, in the Bible, was stolen and sold into slavery by his brothers. Right? And the Qur'an mentions the problem. What was the problem for Joseph? How come this Joseph got into this predicament he was in? How come he couldn't handle his situation? Says," they put him in a dry well". In a dry well, you see. So, without the water you don't have the human sensitivity. You don't have the moral sensitivity, You don't have the emotional sensitivity, you don't have the spiritual sensitivity, you don't have the human sensitivity - without the water, symbolic of being the necessary human sensitivity, you see. And that makes it, makes you vulnerable to those who want to put the wool on, put the wool over your eyes; to those who want to sell you into slavery, yeah.

Don't buy secularism, secularism. Don't buy this dry logic that tells us you can't let your human sensitivities get involved with that logic. You can't apply it to human nature; it only apply to the physical reality. The physical sciences they represent the true sciences and if they are not purely physical sciences; they are not pure sciences. Don't buy that kind of stuff! That's Joseph's dry well, that's right. And pretty soon you're a slave of the people who invent that to catch those who want some understanding. Those who don't want any understanding, they give them the " soaps" and something else that we're going to get to; and many other things. They got a whole store of things for their subjects.

Now, yes. We were cautioned in the Nation of Islam, as it was called, you hear; I said, " as it was called ". We were cautioned in the Nation of Islam concerning the five senses. We were told to think five times before you speak, and maybe you'll be right. So we were cautioned. Right? To think five times before you speak and maybe you'll be right. Can you help me out, so we can save time? Can you put the Arabic alphabet " ha", " ha", "ha", "ha"; "alif", "ba", "ta", "tha", "jeem", "ha". That's right, very good. Can you put " adamant" out? ( Faheem Shuaibe Adamant? ) Adamant, adamant - put him out. ( Faheem Shuaibe - Put him out? ) Yes sir; thank you very much, (chuckle).

Alright, " ha " - alright. Now if we count the alphabet; " alif " " ba " " ta " tha " " jeem " - HA is the sixth one. Right? Put that, put that. Alright, that's the sixth letter, " ha "; -' alif " " ha " " ta " " tha " " jeem " - " ha ". Now, the Nation of Islam's teacher wanted us to come to six, six. Put six u~ there; u~ on the board, the top there somewhere- wanted us to come to six. Five wasn't enough; he said, " Think five times before you speak and maybe you'll be right". So that means that you should trust your five senses but you won't- it's not, it's not guaranteed. It's not a guarantee, you see. It's not really a secured thing " and maybe you'll be right". But how do we know that he wanted something out of the six? Because he gave six letters; "alif" "ba" "ta" "tha" "jeem" "ha"; those were the six letters he gave. I could say that when I was that high. When I was a toddler I could say " alif " " ba"" ta " tha " " jeem " " ha ". So he gave six letters, that's all. He gave no more, to nobody! To nobody in the, in the - no more than six (chuckle); " alif " " ba " " ta " " tha " jeem " " ha ". Yes, six letters - okay.

Now, but what he didn't give and he left, he left that; whether they get it or miss it - was " TA MARBUTA "., Would you put " TA MARBUTA " un there. No, that's not " TA MARBUTA ". " Marbuta "-means " tied " " ta ". (Faheem Shuaibe -Tie Ta?) Tied ; like a knot tied; it's looped " ta ". " TA MARBUTA ". It stands by itself, but it's tied. ( Faheem Shuaibe - Stands by itself? ) Yes, yes - not quite. Let me put it there for you. That's okay, that's not bad; but a good " TA MARBUTA " is like this. That's a good "TA MARBUTA". See "TA MARBUTA".

Now, what is this? No. Yes. Who said five? That's five. How do you write five? One, two, three, four, five. " MARBUTA " with no " ta ". So this is " TA MARBUTA ", " TA MARBUTA". Alright, so the five is good - but you need the five to become "TA MARBUTA". And to get that you have to be free, and six is free; you see. The five senses - not free; five senses locked up under matters, laws, instincts ; whatever. But the rational mind, when it comes, when it comes, gets free of the material world; so that it then examines the material world and applies the logic that is designed in the material to advance the material. Then you have a free five. Is that right? Following a one, one is the scheme of God; one law, one scheme. Right? So then the five become six. Five senses following one law, right. It's free then free! Not under the material it's in; it's free - you see. But, even the six here has a problem.

Free, need to be free; but when the six get free and really understands then the six choose to become five again. Right. (Arabic phrase) "Die, that you may live", you see. So the six decide, decides to become five again; because the six realize - this ain't me. This is His. His law, His scheme - I'm five; a conscious five, a "TA MARBUTA". So that's , so that's what we need. We need a five but we need to have a "TA MARBUTA".

Now, let's see can I hurry up with this. We're going to skip over some of this; all of this I had this for you tonight. This is good; I'll give it to some other night. We're going to make it short, cause we don't want to stay too late tonight.
Now, let's look at something here. Let's look at the word " music ". Take that off now, put music up there. The Bible says, " My people are destroyed by music" or "with music and song". Yes sir. Music - so let's see could we see, get some evidence of that. We're not off the subject; still on the subject - five senses. Put the word, you got "music"? ( Yes sir ) would you, would you separate it. Put "MU" and then put" SIC" "a sick mu", yeah. Now, so we got a " sick mu"; and the cow says " mu "; and you've already said what the cow is. In your talk, you told us what the cow was. (Faheem Shuaibe - In mine?) Yes; and the music makes a cow sick, (chuckle ). So music is a sick cow; "MU" "SIC"; but let's , let's see what else we can get out of that, that ain't all.

Now, put the word " sythe " on the board; S Y T H E. (Faheem Shuaibe - "S Y T H E ? " ) Uh huh, SYTHE scythe. Now, a scythe is - can you make for me the Russian scythe? They call it sickle. Something like that, that's right. That's like the Russians, yeah. Yeah, that's like the Russians. Right? (Faheem Shuaibe - Do you want the hammer too? ) No, no - no, no - no, no.
That's the Russians' scythe, Russians scythe. Now that scythe is for cutting off heads. Now, can you show me the other sythe? For cutting off, for cutting down grass? No, no - no, no - no. It's made curved too but it's long. Open the curve up; it's long like a wide open moon, see. That's a moon for cutting of heads, we want the one for cutting off knowledge. Something like that, something like that; but they got different ones, got different ones.

You see the Russians, the Russian scythe look like an unfinished question mark. You read in scripture where it says, " Put in the sickle ". Did you ever hear that expression in the Bible? " Put in the sickle ". Now, usually when this statement comes in the Bible, this oughta come - it means punishment's coming; punishment is coming. Okay - boy, time is flying! So we have "MU", "MU " " ZIC " - " MU " ZIC "; it's pronounced like that but it's " MU " " SIC ". And if you sickle, sickle, cut off; what you usually cut off something? Grass.

"MUSE". Put the word "muse" up there; MUSE. "MUSE". "Amuse" means to make him happy. Right? Amusement, you see; "muse". So this is referring to happiness, isn't it? Yeah. Now, there's also a word " muse " that's associated with prophecy, prophecy. In Egypt they say, ancient stories, histories about the ancient Egyptian - Egypt; says that "there was a certain muse in the gate of the city and that no one could get in that city unless they knew how to answer the question of that muse". And that muse would ask this question. Says, "What walks on four; then on two; then on three?" And if you weren't able to answer that question you couldn't get into that city, you see. Into, into " Kahira". You know what "Kahira" means? What does it mean? ( Cairo, Cairo ) "Kahira ". Yeah, it means Egypt but what does "Kahira" mean? What does that word mean ? (Great? - Good? ) No. No. "Oppressive", "oppressive - subduing, subduing"; you see. That's what it means. " Kahira " - means subduing; and no one could get into that oppressive city without the knowledge the answer to that question. Now that question, You know that it have something in it; but that's not the big thing. We just want you to know what's related to this music.

Music, now, music then once represented what? Knowledge! Hidden knowledge! To "muse" meant "to find the secret knowledge!" But then they degenerated the word into this idea of happiness, fun. Just like the "eid" once meant happiness, I mean - pleasure in a good sense, it meant pleasure but in a good clean sense. Now, the word "idiot" pardon me, meant pleasure in a good sense -now " idiot " means a dumbbell. Right ? Yes. So - Music. Now - also " sic ", " sic " -what does " sic " mean ? If you tell your dog, " Sic him Fido" means "to attack". " Sic " means to attack, you see. So attack with what ? With the MUSE. " Sic " means also to seize and " sic " means to break up, tear up; to seize, to attack, to seize, to break apart, That's what it means; to attack, to break, to seize, to break apart; to tear apart. So " sic him ", " sic him " with what? The muse: pleasure, happiness, excitement.

Let's look at now, take that off and put the " classics " up there. We want to look at, to the music. " Classics " and we have people here who know more about music than I do. Alright, I'm not- I'm not an authority on music. We're talking about words; I'm on words. Yeah, classics put classics. They'll, they should get more out of it than I, than we can discuss here. " Classics " - now, can you put under "classics" - "jazz" 1 "Jazz" don't put it too close; so they can see it - give a little space. Give about one big - one, the same space: the same height of the letters. Give that much space, the height of your letters. That space - okay.

Alright, jazz - okay. Now, let me - let me do this and you - . Now, classics; where we have "classics" - put up there " methodical ", "methodical " and ' precisioned "; and where "jazz" is put "improvisation ", "improvisation". These terms don't they describe these two kinds, different kinds of music . The "classics" are methodical and precisioned. Precisioned means having accurate measurement; accurate, following - pardon me, accurate measurement and not only does it mean this. It means that the - the discipline is before the action. ( Cut that.) The discipline is before the action, for this one. This one means, the action is before the discipline. Here the discipline is before the action. Here, the action is before the discipline, you see. This one means to cut in front of - means "to cut from the front". This one means "to cut from behind". Yes. Oh - say why is he attacking our music and he's exalting their music, what kind of a Chief Imam is he? Alright, now let's - let's see this. None of that's our music, none of it is our music. It was given to us.

Now, put now under " jazz " or Put "jazz" again, put "jazz" again under "improvisation " - under "jazz " over there. Yes; and out from " jazz " put the word, " belle ". I think that's how you spell "belle". Isn't that " belle" for a beautiful woman? That's what I said BELLE. Excuse me if I didn't say that, I thought that's what I said. Okay. And put a dash - like a slash to separate if another, I want another word but I want a slash to separate it. And put the word "BALE " and another slash; "ball" "BALL; and another slash, " bale ""BALE ". Now put over there, under " jazz ", " Belial "; put" baal - slash " baal ", " B A A L "; slash again, " Bel ", " BEL", now, put again a dash " Jezabel " - " Jezabel ", it's a "a" I think; and then "Bel" ; "B E L". " Jezabel ", it might be two " z's ", two " z's ". But you know, "Jezebel " Frankie Lane, didn't he - I think he sung about "Jezebel"?

Alright, now - " improvisation "; " improvisation " we want to look at what happened. We had " jazz " didn't we? Then what happened? After jazz - can you put, take - take this off, take this off now? Take improvisation off. We already know - they know improvisation. After " jazz " came/^vhat ? Put the " spirituals " too put the " spirituals " somewhere here - " spirituals ". There were " spirituals " before " jazz " you see; and then "jazz" came. Right? And then after the " jazz" came, there came - put over here, "blues". Then " rhythm and blues"; then " rock n roll "; then " rock ". Yes. " Blues "; " jazz "; " blues "; " rhythm and blues "; then " rock n roll "; then " rock "; then " acid rock ". Yes I This is how it developed. Right ? That's how the music, that's how the music developed. " Punk rock"; " acid rock " - all in the same ( chuckle ).

Now, what is this - what's happening here? What's happening? The "classics" and "spirituals"; then "jazz " came in. To do what? What did "Jezzabel " do Huh- she's a temptress, yes. Huh?- She had the sheep's hair cut. She was the one over the cutting of the wool, you see. Jazz is real quick, the time - tempo; real quick; short, cutting, cutting, cutting. Fast and cutting, see. " Jezza " that means to cut, you see. . " Jezza " means to cut. "Jezzabel" means to cut off your senses. ( chuckle ) Jezzabel cuts off you senses. What is a " Bel"; who is " Bel" ? One word for " Bel" -" Bel". This "belle " here is beautiful. But there's another " bel "- is a cruel lord that rode the donkey, right. " Bel" riding the ass. Right ? So one " Belle ' is beautiful; the other " Bel " is bad. And " Bel ", if you look up the meaning of this word " Bel " for this god- the meaning is "god or lord of heaven and earth '. That's the meaning; " god or lord of heaven and earth"; any good book you can look up the meaning, that carry the meaning for these words. It means " god or lord of heaven and earth", you see.

Now, if Bel's riding the donkey - that tells us what? That the one with that knowledge is oppressing the ignorant people; donkey is symbolic of the ignorant people. Is oppressing the ignorant People you see.

"Jezzabel ", " Jezzabel " then her name here, "Jezzabel " means the "Jezza ' -the one who cuts the senses for Bel. For Bel, you see. Now look at this word " Baal ". Baal is also the name of a deity - false deity in scripture; and this Baal was an oppressive god; same as Bel. Same as Bel, in fact Baal and Bel - these are the same. -They just, the name just change in scripture, just changed.

Now Belial mean acting with conscious "; acting with conscious, environmental conscious; moved and responding to environmental conscious, you see. What do we mean by "environmental conscious"? I hope you understand all this terminology. By environmental conscious - effected by what is happening in your environment; that is all it means - conscious of what is happening in your environment.

Now, the people that come under jazz or " spells " music, music; are they, are they environment conscious? No! They are not environment conscious. Now, Adam when he was put in the garden, wasn't he made environment, "environment conscious" ? Yes! He was made "environment conscious" - Adam; was made "environment conscious". So, Bel represents a consciousness, pardon me, an ability over this kind of consciousness. So it implies that he had science, wisdom, you see. He had science and wisdom; therefore he can be the "lord of heaven and earth". This is a false deity. What kind of heaven and earth? Spiritual life and material life. Spiritual life and material life, you see. He can be, he's over both; discipline - spiritual life represents discipline when you're talking about
heaven. We're talking about disciplines! And when we're talking about earth we're talking about rational mind, intellect, growth, emotionality and all that. You see, now - yes, getting back here.

Belial, what does the Bible say of Belial? Look up Belial, Belial in a dictionary. What'd it say? A worthless thing: isn't that what they say? A worthless thing : how come it's worthless? Because that's their attitude. The creature who's trusted free; to have freedom, free mind to respond to the environmental influences on his own; that's a worthless creature for us. He's worthless for us. We want the creature that comes under our control. That kind of creature is no good for our order: no good for our society. We want the creature that we can dominate! I don't - don't tell me you get me no Belial! I don't want no Belial!

You know Bilal, Bilal is this one - Bilal is this ! Bilal is the man that is environmentally sensitive. Environmentally sensitive Person will do what is best: if they know what is best. And when Bilal saw what was better, he gave up what he was doing and chose what was better. Because he was environmentally sensitive.

Alright, okay - so Jezzabel, Jezzabel - she's the one who cuts the senses off for Bel; who rides Belial with music and many other things. Now take it off. No no, no no, no no - we didn't finish - LOOK BALE I Don't think it ain't related. " BALE ", " bale " is what? To bundle something, tie it together. Once you cut off the senses then tie them. Tie them all together, that's right. Make one big bundle out of them. Tie them all together so they can't get loose; so the senses can't loose to operate, you see. So they bale them. Now another word for "bail" is "to get you out of jail". Say "oh he bailed me out". Right ? Come back to jail again didn't we; came right back to jail again. Now if you, now if there's a kind of expression to bail someone out of jail; there must also be a way to bale him in jail.

Now, Prophet Muhammad he spoke of tying, too. "Bale" is "to tie up"; but there - what's tied up is tied un after it's cut. It's cut then tied up. Right? Can you erase all this now? And I want you to put camel on the board. He said, " Tie your camel". Isn't that what he said? The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, told the faithful to " tie their camel; - trust Allah and tie Your camel". Alright, this statement mean follow rational faith, follow rational faith to counter haywire tendency. You should write this down. Follow a rational faith to counter the haywire tendency, tendency; haywire -HAYWIRE, HAYWIRE tendency in the intuitive urge, intuitive urge. You have an intuitive urge.

When I say, "I found my way intuitively "; most of you understand what I'm saying? Raise your hand if you understand what I mean. Right, I thought most of us understand what we mean by intuitively; because it's a common word. So there's an intuitive nature or intuitive aspect of the human soul - intuitive aspect, of the human soul. The human can find something intuitively; can be directed intuitively. But we have no control over that, do we? The intuitive, the intuitive urge in us is like the improvisation, improvisation. So that's why the musician when he gets his horn, the jazzman when he gets into his jazz, he just starts hitting it intuitively. Right ? He hit his notes intuitive^ and he's really good. So jazz was designed to bring out the intuitive ability in the musician: but they speed the jazz
up so fast that it affects the listener in a spell binding way just like the spiritual or someone else. Pretty soon the listener, he's under spell- listening to jazz; unless that jazz is slow and mellow. And even if it's slow and mellow, over a longer period, long enough period of time he still gets heavy headed, he gets drunk. He gets light headed, pardon me, right? Yes! It is designed to do that.

So jazz is designed to bring out the intuitive ability in the musician and to take his mind (off of rational, methodical thought. Along with that came dope addicts and everything else. Right? It really just degenerated the musical people. Dope addicts and all other filth just came in with it. Right? And then they brought it on down as we bought it on down too; from "rhythm and blues" to "rock", all the way down to "acid rock". Right? So you can see the direction in the music; the history of the music. You can see what they were after. Now you think that's an accident that it's so plain how the history went. That's no accident!

"Tie your camel". However he also said regarding this matter. And write this down - this is a quote from prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be on him; " But should you find a camel lost from his owner, leave him free, he has a way". Jazz was introduced to bring out the intuitive ability and to speed it up, speed it up and drive it into spell-binding influence; so that the intuitive urge in us is killed. The intuitive urge is killed or enslaved, that is, not actually killed; but, enslaved by that kind of music. Right now after all these years of most of us coming through that jazz; and don't think that what affected your parents, missed you.

We are talking now about nature, instinct, inborn behavior. What happened to them has in some degree affected the children. So we find that we are given to just guess at things; gamble with circumstances; search by rhythm; think by rhythm; find a way rhythmically. Now you know yes, that's characteristic of us. On the job we're working by rhythm. Somebody gives us a problem, we can't keep rhythm out of our problem. Give you a mathematical problem; if you could listen to the mind of the student you would hear them working the problem out to rhythm.

Yeah - and the answers, if they get them, come the same way. What they call it spontaneously? Sporadically, spontaneously, by improvisation? Yeah.

"When offered a place in the homes of the Ansars, the Prophet released his camel to her instincts; her instincts for choosing the more secure or more amicable host ". The camel was released; he didn't choose the house. They offered him-the home. He let his camel free and his camel went to a certain house; and that's the house that he chose to stay in.
(He just, he just leaned up against the switch that cuts off the juice. ( chuckle ) It ain't as late as you think it is. It's only five minutes to nine. They thought it was twelve o'clock)

Yes, so he said, " If you find a sheep straying; keep it, take it to its' master if you know its' master; or keep it and hold it for its' master. But if you find a camel (pardon me) straying, leave it; it has a way". So it's talking about this intuitive urge in us, the intuitive urge in us. In the camel we say it's instinct, he has an instinct. Camel can find water, all animals have it; but camel really is a typical animal in the Arab history and culture representing this intuitive instinct. Because the man will be on the desert, he can't find the water and the camel will go right to it.

And camels have so many sensitivities. Camels sense what his master wants. Horse, other animals have it too; but this camel really is this animal that's descriptive of this high sense, this high intuitive sense. A camel if you weigh him, put too much on him; he won't let up. If you put the load on imbalanced, he won't get up. He waits till you balance it right. When you get it right, then he'll come up with it. Camel very intelligent. The camel also eats from everything. Camel gets hungry, he eat wood, rags, everything. He's a survivor - a camel will survive! He can do without water long, long periods of time. In winter he hardly drinks at all; see, he got a whole lot of sense. In winter he hardly drinks at all. Winter come and we still drinking like we're crazy; ain't no need for all that water. I'm talking about the winter of spiritualism; when it all freezes up. Yes, yes.

Alright so, he said "Tie you camel". So that tells us that this intuitive urge is good. And where is it coming from? What it is? It's coming from the five senses. It's of the five senses. It's a sense in the five senses. Right? Now, if you take, you see what Muhammad Abdullah did? ( Erase the board again; we're about finished now. We're going to let you go home.) He put line, right; and he said, " How you shorten those lines?" And he said, "Make a circle". Right ?

Now, if you have five senses and they're operating loosely and if you make them operate together like the hand; the fist. These fingers operate together; they cooperate with each other, they work together. If you make them operate together, what is the symbol of the unity of these? One fist - right? One fist. So what is the symbol of five senses being tied together? The intuitive sense, the intuitive sense represents all the five senses working together in perfect harmony, yeah. The intuitive sense, one sense that is five working as one Perfect harmony. They have become like one! Like the fist; and it's the intuitive sense. The intuitive sense can, can see the word written on this side while it's down. Right? They call it psychic; but it's the intuitive sense; can see the word; can see what's behind the door. It can see physical things. This is reality! Alright, this is, this is science, okay this is science. In fact I can do it myself. That's right, I can do it myself. Not, not - but it's a hit and miss thing. It ain't nothing that you get all the time. But if you train yourself you'll be able to get better and better at it. I have, I have done it and I have witnesses, that's right. I have living witnesses that I've done it.

Okay, so we're talking about intuitive sense that can find physical but spiritual things are happening sometimes. Right? and they say " Hey, I sense mama's in trouble; I sense baby's in trouble". It finds spiritual things too doesn't it? Yes. It finds all kinds of things; so it's, it's one sense but it's a combination of senses. It's all the senses acting as one. And we call it intuitive sense.

So, you see the six, sixth sense. In the movie about Damien they put three sixes in his hair, right - in his hair. Why? Because the animal has an intuitive sense too; but his intuitive sense doesn't necessarily follow the scheme of God. Man's intuitive sense comes to life and finds its rest in life by following and obeying the scheme of God. Is that right? Yes. But the animal its intuitive sense just operate in its' own defenses.

The cat, when the cat senses danger; it doesn't know cat has a curiosity; sense danger. Cat hair will come up. Right? Yes, the dog, all animals in fact, when they sense danger; especially dog animals, the hair comes up right behind his head; hair comes up, rise up. He senses danger and he's curious but he's moving very cautiously. Why? Because his instinct is telling him, I suspect I suspect. Not you, the senses, five senses in you, suspect that there's danger, you see. Yes. Animals when they're uptight or in a dangerous situation, like the rooster when he fights; he's courageous - but fighting also makes him very tense. And his feathers come up around his neck. Right? And even all of his feathers, you can see all of his feathers become very tense. So this intuitive sense has been called hair, you see. Hair has been representative of this intuitive sense.

Now, in the Bible - Yes we're almost through; in the Bible Mary Magdalene is shown using her hair with her tears to clean Jesus' feet. Right? She cleans his feet with her hair and her tears. So what is this telling us; what is this telling us? Mary Magdalene, she's a Mary too; Mary the mother of Jesus; Mary - different Mary. But this is Mary Magdalene.

Now, if they say that a person is overly sentimental they say that person is a "Magdalene", is a "Magdalene". They have different form of the word but that's exactly what it means - different form; but it means "Magdalene" means overly sentimental, You see. That's what the term comes to be; and it comes from her as being nosed in that picture - tears and hair cleaning the feet.

What does tears symbolize? Emotional sensitivity; emotional sensitivity and hair symbolize intuitive sensitivity. So these are two sensitivities working together to clean feet. What do feet symbolize? Spiritual life, spiritual impulse, spiritual tendencies, spiritual impulse. But it symbolizes more specifically the masses in religion, the masses in religion; the common people in religion, you see. Because they give, they give their whole life to emotional sensitivity. Soul brother, under the foot soul brother life. So they give their whole life to this emotional sensitivity and soul sensitivity; this blind impulsive thing, you see. Because feet, feet are symbolic of what? Habit; 'cause when you walk, yes - by habit; Say, "What walk of life you follow?", means what walk of life have you habitually given yourself to. Right? What, mean what way of life have you habitually given yourself to; so that's your walk of life. You stand, you stand it's by effort when you're a little baby; but pretty soon you stand by what? Habit! You've just formed the habit of being able to stand. So no effort, requires no effort or nothing; it's by habit, and you'll walk by habit. So the feet are symbolic of that kind of impulse in us and the habit formed life; and it's descriptive of the common masses of people that follow blindly the habits of the society, you see. And she's pictured there crying with her tears and her hair; and she's washing feet. Telling us what?

That the Church, this is not Al-Islam this is the Bible I'm talking about; that the Church uses these two to treat the problems of the masses - emotionalism and intuitive nature.
The preacher want to get music: he want to get you responding to music. He wants to get you following him blindly. It was originally intended to bring out the intuitive ability in the listener, in the members of the congregation, to cultivate that intuitive ability in them; by playing on that nature, you see. But if it's carried too far into emotionalism, if it becomes too sentimental, too emotional- then what you do? You block, you block the people out; you bring them under an emotional frenzy, you see. They become spellbound; they become drunk. They fall out, they loose their senses. So the thing that if you carried it in a small degree, perhaps will awaken this ability in it; if you put it to music, put it to music or to a rhythm, a repetitious rhythm, you destroy the very thing that you were trying to bring out. And that's what has happened. Instead of bringing the masses to enlightenment, because the intuitive ability is next to rational ability; that's how the man come.

He comes from instinct, natural senses, to intuitive ability, then rational. That's how they're developed. The intuitive suppose to bring us into rational; but it won't if we play upon that ability to set it to rhythm and speed up the tempo so that the rational ability can't keep up with it. Your rational ability can only keep up with certain measurements, at certain rates of speed. If you speed up the rate for that particular measurement, pretty soon you loose the rational ability and then the person will fall out; the person will become spellbound; the person will fall out. So that's the purpose of it, to drive you out; of your mind. Yes, that's the purpose of it, to drive you out of your mind! And that's what they've done with the music; driven our poor people, all of them, not just the black sheep, all the sheep, all of them- cows too, everybody out of their mind; camel too. With jazz they even got the camel. Yes; cut off his poor senses.

You know the Arabs, they got a form of music, and not only Arabs, those Semetic people over there; many of them Greeks, Arabs and many others. They got a form of music that's actually was jazz; don't think jazz just came. They don't call it jazz, they call it " sunnejas "; but it's the same thing. ( example ) It's that kind of improvisation, the same stuff. They play it on the "ude"; they play it on different instruments, same stuff. So, the Semitic People knew this and they introduced it to the West and we, we were the vehicle for it. The Blacks were the vehicle for the jazz, you see. The Jazz came to us and what it did was attract the masses from spirituals; because up to that time it was spirituals. Even folk songs, aren't they another form of spirituals? See, all that music; but when jazz came in it bought a new mood in; new tune, new mood, new tempo and it just brought about the degeneration of everything.

So, I think we've covered enough of that tonight. Now you all remember that now; and let's save the people from music. And those who are musicians, they should be careful to make their music so that it will awaken intelligence and good senses. Don't make music that drive people crazy, that sped up their impulses so fast that the impulse runs away from the intelligence. We don't want that, see. Don't separate the people from their intelligence. Then you - if you do that you're Jezzabel; cutting off the senses.

Alright, we'll take five minutes, five minutes of questions, although we're late. Yes sir, brother Imam Ansari.

Bro. Imam Ansari: In line with your talk on music, recently I was reading a book called Superlearning and what it's dealing with is a study that's being done in Europe now with music. And they're using music to enhance the learning ability of students. And they use that music called "Baroque"; which is normally done, -classical music but it's at sixty beats per second. And they use this particular, like they'll take out one segment of like Bach's music which is just like the tempo. It's like at sixty beats per second and in order to play like that tempo and teach languages with the tempo. So that with every beat they'll give a word and a definition and they say that with that slowed down pace it slows down the breathing and it opens up the intuitive power, expands the mind so that the mind can retain more.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Yes I'm sure!

Bro. Imam Ansari: They're doing this study in Czechoslovakia, Russia; they've got a few schools. There's one in New York and there's another one in Connecticut, and I think there's one in Berkeley that I read about.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Yes. Now, on your jobs, working- working conditions, situations; they found that workers that need the best, maximum benefit from the environment to do their work- they're thinking, thinking - conducive to their thinking requirements. They found that by making the place pleasant, its appearance and everything, the environmental surroundings; making them pleasant to the senses, to the eye, to the eye; and by having music also, low not high. Low music and very slow music and very melodious music but slow; they found that it raised the intelligence and the thinking ability of their workers. This was recently reported, although they've been doing similar studies, they know. So if they know this, how come they give the masses all this fast stuff to shatter their brains?

They don't love you, they don't love you! They care nothing for you; so we have to care something about ourselves. And if we go on and follow that stuff after knowing better we deserve whatever comes to us, we deserve what they're giving us. That's right! Just one other, just one other thing I want to say, to bring you to what we really should be looking at and that's The Qur'an that's advanced over that. That's supposed to be some new science they discovered and in the Qur'an, 140o years old, read it in slow rhythmic, slow (Arabic word) slow rhythm, rhythmic motion. So you can get the intelligence from it, so you can get the meaning from it. You speed it up you won't get it; and at the same while you're having time to think about it and digest it. The slow musical recital of the Qur'an is bringing out the intuitive life; bringing it to the surface. Yes!

Bro. Imam Warithud Deen Muhammad: One more and then we're going to Stop.

Questioner: Can I make one point brother Imam ?

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Well you know, I'm sorry because it's two others too. Yes sir.

Questioner: In our involvement, some of us are students in the various universities around here, in our involvement in our effort to raise the level of human knowledge; whether in terms in books that we may write. There's a limit that I can see in many universities is their rationality, they're bent on rationality, I mean totally; as you pointed out, that is totally their focus. Okay, if we raise, we use we build rationality and we keep it infused with the spiritual sense in order to maintain the balance, now - what, my question is essentially how can we, how do we maintain the balance? We use rationality, we keep it infused with the spiritual sense with the moral sense; but still, you see there's an upper limit. Because in the story of Job when he was breaking the stone down in the dust; you can continue to break a thing down and break it down and you can go from dust to molecules to atoms to the smaller particles.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Yes, I got you. I understand!

Questioner: Do you see where I'm going to ?

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Sure, sure. That's right; you can search a thing to no end. That's right.

Questioner: That's exactly what I'm getting at.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Yes, it can become an obsession; and you search a thing to no end. Yes; once we, once we bring people to life and get them in the right frame of mind; get their intelligence disciplined in the way that Allah intended it. Then we should begin then to show them the scheme that Allah has created for them to live in. No; you live within the pattern that God has designed for you, you know. We don't want to do outrageous things or supernatural things, or fantastic things. We want to fulfill our human destiny. Yes, so we have to get the mind right first and then we apply, we devote our mind to the cultivation of the person and the society.

Questioner: Now we begin to focus on the things in regards to.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Yes, the requirements for life the requirements to fulfill life; that's what we should concentrate on; the total life, not just part of it, the total life. And we should busy ourselves as students of the sciences, as builders, get into everything. That's how we fulfill ourselves, we have to get into the things, the arteries of the world, the life- vital life from the world. Get into those things and fulfill our human potentials. That way we advance the world while we're advancing ourselves. We don't want to find, we don't want to find the end to anything. We want to find enough light to shine on our needs. You'll never get the end of anything; only Allah knows the end of the things. We know our end. My end is to keep the lights on, keep the rent paid. Yeah. Provide for my children, help society with its objectives so all of us will be helped. To do that we have to get the knowledge that's in the schools; so with this particular orientation we'll be in position to benefit from that knowledge better. With the wrong orientation you can't benefit from the knowledge. Look how many of us go to schools and we ain't nothing but little tools, pawns in the hands of the society. Yeah. Alright, so that concludes it for tonight; I'm sorry to take you for twenty minutes over the time.

Bro. Imam Muhammad: Imams, I wanted to have a few minutes with you; but we won't do it this time. If you come earlier, I expect to be here every Thursday about
fifteen to twenty minutes earlier. So if you come earlier, we'll have about fifteen to twenty minutes together before the others come in; because they're some things I wanted to bring you. If we don't get to it before then we'll have to get to it after, at the end of the class next Thursday. I think I'm here next Thursday, yes; I believe so. Alright, yes; so let's have Du'a and then.
